BR signs deal to procure 9 Korean locomotives

Bangladesh Railway (BR) signed an agreement Monday with the Hyundai Rotem Company of Korea for procurement of nine meter-gauge diesel electric locomotives.
TA Chowdhury, additional director general (rolling stock) of BR, and Woo Dong IK, director (overseas sales) of the Korean company, signed the deal on behalf of their respective sides at a function at the Rail Bhaban in the city.
In pursuance of the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) loan agreement, the BR signed the deal under a project of procuring 46 diesel locomotives.
The total cost of the project is Tk 2.84 billion, of which, Tk 85 million and Tk 1.99 billion would be provided from local resources and foreign aid respectively, a BR statement said.
The price of the locomotives including cost of spare parts, training and wages of service engineer is Tk 220 million and the total cost per locomotive including custom duty and Vat is Tk 310 million, the statement added.
Iftekhar Haider, joint secretary of the Railway Division, BR director general Belayet Hossain and additional director general Quazi Asadullah, among others, were present on the occasion.
