BRAC Bank has announced the allocation of Tk 20 million from its Corporate Social Responsibility fund to support the treatment of students and other individuals wounded during the recent movement.
The bank's Independent Directors also pledged to contribute with the money equivalent to a month of their salary to the initiative, which is in line with the bank's commitment to social justice and equality, according to a press release by the bank.
Around 300 people died in the demonstrations that began as protests against employment quotas but spiralled into a movement seeking ex-prime minister Sheikh Hasina's overthrow, according to different media reports. Some estimate that the number of casualties is higher.
Thousands sustaining severe injuries, primarily young students and other protesters are currently receiving treatment in various government and private hospitals, BRAC Bank said.
While the interim government has pledged to cover their medical expenses, many require specialised medication and support due to the severity of their injuries, the BRAC bank said and called for additional support from various stakeholders to ensure their proper treatment and recovery.
Selim RF Hussain, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of BRAC Bank, said, "As a responsible corporate entity, we must stand by those who have fought for a fairer and more equitable society. The individuals who participated in the movement have demonstrated bravery in their quest for justice, and we are committed to supporting their recovery and well-being."
