BRAC Bank Reading Cafés bring author Dipu Mahmud face to face with his readers

Sunday, 7 June 2026

BRAC Bank's Sepal and Chuadanga Reading Cafés hosted lively discussions on author Dipu Mahmud's short story collection 'Breakup', bringing together literature enthusiasts for an engaging exchange between readers and the writer, according to a press release.
Participants read selected stories from the collection and shared their observations on themes, characters, language and storytelling techniques - all in the author's presence.
Mahmud, a development practitioner by profession, is one of Bangladesh's most prolific contemporary authors with 132 published books spanning novels, short stories and children's literature. He openly admitted that he learns about writing by listening to readers discuss and critique his own work.
Though born in the 1960s, he wrote many of the stories in 'Breakup' with Generation Z readers in mind, deliberately familiarising himself with their language, expressions and communication styles.
The collection largely explores romantic relationships and the emotional complexities of modern Bengali life but also includes two stories set against the backdrop of Bangladesh's Liberation War, adding historical depth to the book.
Readers praised his use of contemporary diction, noting that it felt natural and authentic rather than forced. They also highlighted his ability to craft relatable characters and realistic situations that resonate with younger audiences.
The discussions offered Mahmud valuable insights into how his work is received, helping him better understand the strengths and limitations of his writing and contributing to his growth as an author.
The events reflected the growing role of BRAC Bank's Reading Cafés in fostering literary engagement by creating platforms where readers and writers can meet, exchange ideas and explore literature together.
