The Asiatic Society of Bangladesh (ASB) has conferred fellowship on BRAC Chairman Fazle Hasan Abed in recognition of his remarkable contribution to the country's poverty reduction, education expansion and women empowerment.
A reception ceremony was organised in this connection at the city's National Museum Saturday. Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Chairman Rehman Sobhan attended the function as the chief guest while ASB fellow AF Salahuddin was the special guest.
Rehman Sobhan said Abed took universal literacy as the keystone for his development structure in order to make development possible and sustainable.
Salahuddin Ahmed said his (Abed) development thoughts highlighted on the improvement of education, health and reducing the rate of mother and child mortality.
Expressing his reaction over ASB fellowship, Fazle Hasan Abed said that he had started his development journey with a dream of emancipating the distressed humanity of rural Bangladesh.
He said his dream has now started to be materialised, as BRAC was now operating its development work in many countries of Asia and Africa crossing the national boundary.
ASB vice-president Amirul Islam Chowdhury, general secretary Mahfuza Khanam and reception committee convener Sharif Uddin also spoke at the function with society president Sirajul Islam in the chair.
