BRAC disburses Tk 954.5m among B'baria farmers

Brahmanbaria, Nov 9: A number of poor farmers in Brahmanbaria district have changed their lot by taking loans from BRAC, a leading non-government organisation (NGO).
BRAC disbursed Tk954.5 million (Tk95.45 crore) loans among poor farmers through its five area offices and forty-two branches in the district in 10 months from January to October of this year, sources said.
It has three micro-credit programmes; -- Dabi, Unnati and Progati. Dabi has registered 116,399 members and 81,463 borrowers, Unnati has registered 14,371 members and 11,419 borrowers and Progati has registered 3,200 members and 3,200 borrowers in Brahmanbaria district during the period.
The loans have been given for poverty alleviation so that the farmers can implement various projects like cattle rearing, crop cultivation, pisciculture, etc.
The farmers can invest the borrowed money in establishing various small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to improve their socio-economic condition, BRAC Area manager Abul Kalam Bhuian informed.
