The Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC), one of the world's leading NGOs, has launched a Tk 1.10 billion project for rehabilitation of thousands of retrenched workers of the state-owned enterprises (SOEs).
The UK government's grant of 4.25 million pounds contribute a part of the project.
Under the project, styled, 'Social Protection Package for Retrenched Workers (SPPRW)', we have already identified about 45,000 vulnerable workers," Mehejabeen ZK, manager, SPPRW of BRAC, told a group of journalists who were taken to Narayanganj Tuesday to interact with some of the beneficiaries of the project.
She said BRAC has conducted counselling sessions for about 24,368 retrenched workers to help them build their capacity and instil confidence in them to explore alternative employment opportunities. "We also arranged training courses for 6049 retrenched workers and disbursed an amount of Tk 63.7 million as loan to among of 2061 workers," Mehejabeen said.
