BRAC's pharmaceutical factory
Wednesday, 16 July 2008
BRAC is the largest NGO in Bangladesh and has been serving the poor section of the population since 1972. Healthcare is a core programme of BARC. In the present era, pharmaceutical medicine is one of the basic ingredients of healthcare. Bangladesh's pharmaceutical industry is well-established to formulate and produce international-standard medicines and cater to the domestic requirement, up to nine-tenth of the same. At the moment, BRAC does not have any medicine production facility. It may set up a pharmaceutical company to produce medicines first to meet its own needs, especially, to run its own healthcare programme and sell the surplus medicine at low price and thus supply quality medicine to the people at an affordable price.
Most of the existing medicine companies have the tendency to fix a very high price for their medicines. Necessary technology, professionals as well as skilled manpower are available here to set up and operate any modern pharmaceutical factory in Bangladesh. The government is developing an API estate in Munshiganj district to localize pharmaceutical factories that will facilitate production of raw materials for the medicines. BARC may ask the authorities concerned to allocate an industrial plot there and set up a pharmaceutical factory to serve humanity in the health sector. BRAC may mobilize capital through issuing initial public offering (IPOs) in the stock market. BRAC has a very good reputation among the public. So, selling shares of its pharmaceutical company among the common investors will not be a problem.
