BRDB disburses Tk 792.8m loan among poor to alleviate poverty

CHITTAGONG, Aug 11 (BSS): Palli Jibikayon Prokalpa and Palli Progoti Prokalpa, two major projects of the Bangladesh Rural Development Board (BRDB), have been contributing much to alleviating poverty of the rural poor and making them self-reliant.
A good number of people including women among 41,121 loan recipients under the projects have become self-reliant in the last seven years in the district, officials said.
According to the BRDB, the two projects were initiated in 2001-2002 fiscal year aiming at alleviating poverty of the people of the remote areas of the district.
The BRDB authorities have disbursed about Tk 792.8 million (79.28 crore) among 41,121 low-income people through 1,374 registered 'samities' under Palli Jibikayon Prokalpa in Patiya, Anowara, Hathazari, Boalkhali, Mirsharai, Fatikchhari, Banshkhali, Sitakunda, Satkania, Raozan, Lohagara, Rangunia and Swandip, the officials said.
Besides, nearly Tk 487.7 million were disbursed among the 5,110 persons through 227 groups in 14 upazilas including Chandanaish during the same period.
The government initially allocated around Tk 500 million under the two projects during the last seven years. However, the authorities have disbursed over Tk 1.28 billion as loan from its revolving funds.
During the period, the BRDB authorities realised about Tk 733.1 million from the beneficiaries of Palli Jibikayon Projects and Tk 326 million were recovered from Palli Progoti Prokalpa.
The authorities have been providing loan for fish cultivation, nursery, cow fattening, poultry, goat rearing, food processing, repairing and selling of irrigation equipment, paddy husking, carpeting, tailoring, sericulture, mat making, blacksmith and other incoming generating projects.
Jesmin Akhter of Banshkhali Upazila said she took Tk 14,000 loan three years ago and invested the amount in cow fattening, nursery and poultry. She repaid the loan and took another 15,000 loan in the second phase to expand her business.
Jesmin has become self-reliant through the BRDB 'samity'. She received an award for her efforts to change her lot with the help of the loan.
Highlighting the ongoing projects, BRDB Deputy Director Ranjit Kumar Chowdhury said, the beneficiaries have been utilising their loan properly and getting benefit of it.
