Breach of embankment puts thousands at risk in Shoronkhola

Saturday, 8 December 2007

BAGERHAT, Dec 7 (UNB): About 40,000 people in four unions of Shoronkhola Upazila beside the Baleswar river embankment are passing their days in great uncertainty.
Several portions of the 20-kilometre (km) embankment on the river had been washed away by tidal waves during the cyclone Sidr that left a trail of devastation at different villages in Shoronkhola Upazila.
It was apprehended that 21 villages on the riverbank in the four unions might be inundated again if the tidal wave of more than normal height hit the embankment.
Executive Engineer of District Water Development Board Mohammad Abdur Razzak said some 66 km of the embankment had been damaged by the recent devastating cyclone.
He said a letter had been sent to the higher authorities seeking necessary funds for reconstruction and renovation of the embankment.
