Breach on WDB embankment panics people

SATKHIRA, Mar 31 (UNB): Local people have been panicked as a breach developed on an embankment of Water Development Board (WDB) at Khanjia point in Devhata Upazila Friday. Locals said the dam may collapse at the point at any time and inundate vast areas of Devhata and Kaliganj Upazilas. Sources said 100 meters of the embankment are facing erosion since Friday night due to high tide in Ichhamati River. Local people have been trying to construct a ring dam voluntarily and WDB has been dumping sacks of sand to check the collapse. WDB executive engineer Mujibar Rahman said the area is facing great risk as a char has emerged in the Ichhamati River adjacent to Khanjia BOP and strong current hit the embankment during the high tide.
