Break syndicates to rein in price spiral: Taposh

Friday, 10 November 2023

FE REPORT
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh called upon on Thursday the commerce minister to break the market syndicates to contain the price spiral of essential commodities considering the woes of the consumers.
"I call upon the commerce minister to break market syndicates; if necessary apply force, otherwise all the government efforts being taken for the welfare of the people will go in vain," he said.
He came up with the remarks at a function for selling products at subsidised prices by Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) and launching of smart family cards in the capital.
He alleged that the syndicates were destroying the commodity markets.
He said the syndicates were responsible for artificial increase in the prices of potatoes, eggs, rice and edible oil.
Mentioning the high trend in the prices of essential commodities across the globe, he said the government was providing foods to the limited income group of people through TCB.
He, however, said the middle-income people were facing difficulties in maintaining families due to the market syndicates responsible for the price hike.
"If needed, hit and catch them (syndicates). Otherwise what our government has achieved will go in vain and no achievement of us will work," he said.
