KUSHTIA, Mar 25: The law and order situation in Kushtia has worsened causing grave concern among the people of the district. Safety and security of life and property of people are hostage to thugs in the six upazilas here for the past few months.
The local administration along with the law enforcement agencies have totally failed to control the situation. To give an example, most of the listed terrorists have been seen in headquarters of the upazilas.
Incidents of theft, kidnapping, rape, murder (at least twenty people were killed in 45 days), hijacking, extortion are an everyday affair. The thug groups engage in gun battles in broad daylight, rival student groups do the same in educational establishments and the violent activities of outlawed parties is a regular phenomenon.
Narcotics like Phensidyl, rectified spirit, hemp, heroin, sedative capsules and other narcotics are easily available and hundreds are hooked.
Among the criminal acts, the house of former MP and organising secretary of BNP Kushtia district Alhaj Sohrab Uddin came under bomb attack on Mach 9 in which a security guard was seriously injured.
People from all walks of life continue to appeal to the authorities to take a stern step against criminals and bring things back to normal.
