Bangladesh Breastfeeding Foundation in a press release said that breast milk is the best option for better nutrition of children. They expressed the view against the background of contradictory reports on the presence of melamine in powdered milk.
Because of these contradictory reports, mothers are still worried and confused about what to feed their kids. Primarily the Department of Chemistry of Dhaka University stuck to its findings saying melamine had been found in all eight brands namely Yashili 1, Yashili 2, Sweet Baby 2, Dano, Diploma, Red Cow, Anlene and Nido fortified instant. However, recently with the support of FAO, the government sent samples to the Bureau of Quality and Safety of Food in Bangkok October 21 last. They found toxic melamine in three brands of Chinese powdered milk: Yashili 1, Yashili 2 and Sweet Baby 2.
The Foundation, however, points to the fact that powdered milk also contains many harmful different types of metallic substance and micro organism which are responsible for germs of diarrhoea, pneumonia, bronchitis and other known and unknown bacteria and virus.
WHO and FAO in 2004 said that infant formula was not a sterilised food and it could contain micro organisms/germs. Review of data from several countries showed that ensuring breastfeeding within one hour reduced 31 per cent of all neonatal mortality as well as by practising immediate and exclusive breastfeeding, 13 per cent of newborn deaths could be saved, and it appeared as a potential tool to meet Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 4.
The release further mentioned that breast milk helped babies in their mental development, disease control and gave a perfect life for the next generation. It could prevent obesity, diabetes mellitus, blood pressure, cancer and osteoporosis. In addition, it enhanced IQ level, behaviour, sympathy, empathy as well as building bonds with mothers and babies. Mothers were also benefited from breastfeeding their babies, for example, they could decrease the risk of breast and ovarian cancer, the release added.
