BREB implementing power supply in rural areas of Sylhet division

SYLHET, Jan 14: The Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) has been implementing a programme to supply electricity in the rural areas of four districts of Sylhet division and the adjoining Brahmanbaria district under a countrywide special project titled '1.8 Million Consumer Coverage Programme'.
Superintending Engineer of BREB, Sylhet zone, Md Nurul Haque said the three-year project began in the fiscal year (FY) 2012-2013 and scheduled to be completed by June, 2016 last. Later, it had been given one year extension from July 2016.
However, the 4700 km line construction had already been completed against the target of 5250 km while about 150,000 subscribers have already get power connection as 15 sub-stations had been completed against targeted 19. The rests are nearing completion.
Besides, the construction of another 5300 km electricity lines has been going on in this region under the World Bank-financed project styled 'Upgradation of rural electricity distribution system in Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions'.
Of the total, 123 km line would be constructed and renovated in Brahmanbaria Palli Bidyut Samity (PBS), where two substations would be constructed, 183 km lines would be constructed or renovated in Habiganj PBS with two substations at Bahubal and Ajmiriganj upazilas and 146 km line construction or renovation with three new substations at Srimangal, Moulvibazar and in Rajnagar upazilas in Moulvibazar PBS.
In Sylhet PBS-1, 187 km lines would be constructed and renovated alongside construction of three new substations at Balaganj, Golapganj and at Beanibazar while 82 km line construction and renovation would be there in Sylhet PBS-2 where one substation would be constructed at Kanaighat upazila. In Sunamganj PBS, there would be 145 km line construction or renovation while two substations are to be constructed at Doarabazar and Dakshin Sunamganj upazilas.
