FE Report
Bangladesh Rubber Garden Owners' Association (BRGOA) urged the government to reconsider the decision of discarding the lease allotment of 45,000 acres of land in Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT).
"We are shocked at the government's decision of canceling the lease allotment", said BRGOA secretary general SM Haroon-ur-Rashid at a press conference Tuesday.
The government should have consulted the matter earlier with the 'Rubber Cell' formed by Ministry of Environment and Forest, 'Standing Committee' formed by Chittagong divisional commissioner, and BRGOA, as employment of thousands of workers depends on the decision, he said.
Besides, the rubber gardens could play a vital role in developing the socio-economic condition of Bandarban district, he said, adding Bangladeshi rubber gardens annually save foreign currency worth Tk 500 million (50 crore), which would be Tk 2.0 billion in near future.
BRGOA president Mirza Anwar Hossain, vice president Monirul Haque Bachchu, and member and former president of Bangladesh Bar Association Syed Rezaur Rahman, among others, were present at the press conference.
