JHENIDAH, Nov 25: Preparations for manufacturing bricks for the coming season are going on in full swing in all the brick fields of the district.
The brickfields are expected to produce over 70 million bricks worth Tk 4 billion in the coming season, a source in the Jhenidah District Bickfield Owners Association said.
There are 65 enlisted brickfields in the district. Of which 38 are of double kilns and the rest 27 are of single kilns. Besides, in every season also some 10-12 temporary brickfields manufacture bricks and do business in the district which always remains out of calculations.
A double kiln brickfield manufactures ten to fifteen lakh bricks in a season. A single kiln brickfield does half of it. Most of these manufactured bricks are used for government works through contractors. The rest are used in private works.
The brickfields normally manufacture four kinds of bricks namely First Class, Inter Class, second Class and Third Class. Last season the price of one thousand First Class brick rose up to Tk. 6,000. The prices of other classes were : Inter Class Tk. 5,500, Second Class Tk. 4,500 and Third Class Tk. 3,500 per thousand. Every year the prices vary according to the demands.
The government contractors always control the prices of bricks as they normally purchase most of these manufactured bricks. Normally the price increases to some extent every year. It reaches its peak during the first two months of the season when the demand remains much high.
Thereafter the price comes down in the face of good productions in all the brickfields. The prices of brick again rise in the months of June and July for completing the government works by the contractors and thereafter when the season is over in August-September and it increases day by day until the coming of a new season.
The overall earth of various parts in Jhenidah district is
suitable for quality brick procurement. Clayer earth is fit for the purpose. Moreover, the climatic condition also remains favourable as the district sits on upper level. The brick kiln owners can arrange necessary burning means easily which are abundant here. They can have necessary labour or other manpower also on a low payment as the financial condition of the people of the district is not good enough.
Considering all these facilities, a huge number of brick makers and businessmen of other districts also invest huge money here and earn substantial profit. The bricks of Jhenidah district also meet the demand of neighbouring districts.
The seasons of brick manufacturing begins in the month of November and continue up to May each year. Thousands of unemployed poor persons get job opportunities during the period.
All the brickfields have already completed the preparations of manufacturing bricks by this time. A number of brickfields have already began to manufacturing raw bricks and will take these soon into the kilns for burning to procure bricks to catch the high price in the beginning of the season. The other fields have completed most of the preparatory works like mud works, stocking of fire woods, and other initial works.
Right now most of the construction workers of the district are sitting idle as almost all the construction works have stopped due to acute crisis of bricks of the past season. The coming brick season has brought much hopes among them. The drivers, owners and labourers of brick carrier trucks and other vehicles are also hoping much with the beginning of the season.
