CHITTAGONG, Dec 1: Defying all rules and regulations, different brickfields on the bank of the Karnaphuli river are carrying on their business with impunity, concerned sources said.
Massive erosion behind the port area has been caused because of unhindered extraction of soil from the river bank and the mouth of the river to feed those brickfields. It also causes siltation along the port channel which will ultimately make navigation diffcult in the future, sources informed.
Needless to say that if such an unhealthy trend continues it will affect the port channel. In spite of this alarming development, the concerned authority is not playing any role in taking steps, according to local people.
On the other hand, despite filing cases against those unauthorized brickfields by the local administration on previous occasions, it did not result in anything positive because of the local influential people.
It is gathered that there are as many as seven brickfields on the bank of the Karnaphuli river in the Juldha Union under Patiya Upazila. In the absence of adequate field, hill or tila, the owners of the brickfields are using the clay accumulated on the bank of the Karnaphuli river as raw material for manufacturing bricks.
Sources further said, in 2006, CPA magistrate Munir Chowdhury had launched campaign against those brickfields and stopped the brickfields from wrongdoing but they are back in business.
