Financial inclusion and increased environment-friendly investment will be the biggest challenges for the Bangladesh Bank next year, said central bank governor Dr Atiur Rahman Thursday.
The government took a number of steps for economic development in 2009 and the initiatives will strengthen poverty alleviation efforts in 2010, he said.
"Achieving higher growth and reducing poverty through inclusion of the masses in the mainstream and persuasion of environment-friendly investment will be the main challenges of 2010," Dr Atiur said.
Private sector credit growth increased by 15.4 per cent in July-November period, which indicates that import, export and new investments are picking up, he said.
"In October the outstanding private credit stood at Tk 2,314 billion and we expect it will reach Tk 3,423 billion at the end of June," he added.
The governor said there is no problem with the demand and supply of rice and the price of the staple food is rising due to the expectation that the price will go up in future.
India had a bad crop this year and announced to import rice and the Philippines is also importing a large quantity of the cereal.
