British Council, HSBC launch Kids Read in Ctg

CHITTAGONG, Jan 31: The British Council with supported grants from The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Ltd (HSBC) launched 'Kids Read' this morning at Naziria Naymia Mahmudia Madrasha in Chandgaon BSCIC Industrial Area in the port city.
'Kids Read' is an award-winning scheme developed to help children enjoy reading across the Middle East North Africa region as teachers and parents often struggle to find ways to motivate children to read. Bangladesh is one of the eight countries in Asia that the British Council and the HSBC would support the Ministry of Education's current work in English language and literary development.
'Kids Read', developed by the British Council, and supported by grants from the HSBC, will bring many different aspects to the children, teachers, school administration staff and parents in Bangladesh through school events, community events and competitions.
The programme will provide opportunity to develop capacity in six government schools (primary section) as part of the pilot year. The schools, for primary-aged pupils (grades 1-6) nominated by British Council and HSBC and approved by the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, will receive approximately 80 English language story books that will have English language lesson plans and materials, teacher training workshops, student self-access resources and competitions.
Institutions selected for the project are a) Govt National Primary School, DC Hill, b) Mirpara Govt Primary School, Kathgor, c) Ghatforhadbeg Govt Boys' Primary School, Laldighi, d) Naziria Naymia Mahmudia Madrasha, Chandgaon in Chittagong and Cox's Bazar Adarsha Mohila Kamil Madrasha and Kharulia Tamimul Quran Dakhil Madrasha in Cox's Bazar district.
Education Secretary Md Nazrul Islam Khan was the chief guest who was accompanied by Bangladesh HSBC CEO Francois de Maricourt. Senior training consultant of British Council, Bangladesh Andrew Jones moderated the launching ceremony. Alec Williams, a famous story-teller, shared a story-telling session with the children.
