British envoy meets Khaleda

Wednesday, 8 January 2014

British High Commissioner in Dhaka Robert Gibson met BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Wednesday night. The 70-minute meeting that began around 7:30pm was held at the BNP chief’s Gulshan residence. BNP vice-chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury and BNP chairperson’s adviser Sabihuddin Ahmed were present at the meeting. However, neither the British envoy nor the BNP leaders talked to the media about the meeting. Earlier, voicing its displeasure over the low turnout of voters in the 10th parliamentary elections, the United Kingdom (UK) has urged the ‘new government’ and all political parties in Bangladesh to act in line with the interests of the people of Bangladesh. “Bangladesh is an important partner for the UK and we continue to support its people in their aspirations for a more stable, prosperous, and democratic future,” said Baroness Warsi, British Senior Foreign Office Minister, commenting on the election results. On Tuesday, Canadian High Commissioner in Dhaka Heather Cruden also met the BNP chairperson at her Gulshan residence. Meanwhile, a 12-member delegation of Bangladesh Sammilita Peshajibi Parishad, led by its convener Ruhul Amin Gazi, entered the house of Khaleda after the meeting of the British envoy, according to a news agency.
