Broad frustrates New Zealand

Saturday, 7 June 2008

Stuart Broad and James Anderson put England firmly in control of the third Test at Trent Bridge with an unlikely 76-run stand for the eighth wicket, as New Zealand's bowlers toiled lucklessly and with mounting frustration under overcast skies on the second morning. With 20 minutes to go before lunch, Anderson was eventually prised from the crease by Jacob Oram for a career-best 28, but by the break Broad was still in situ, one run shy of his maiden Test half-century, reports Cricinfo.

He was made to sweat for that vital final run, mind you, as Daniel Vettori pinned him down for three tight maidens in a row before Jacob Oram - New Zealand's most economical seamer - extended Broad's runless run to 22 balls with a strangulating final over before lunch.

England 341 for 8 (Broad 49*, Sidebottom 3*) v New Zealand
