MAGURA, Sept 25: Cultivation of BRRI Aus-48 paddy is gaining popularity in the district.
Sources said, a good number of farmers said growers generally do not show interest in producing Aus paddy for low production. But BRRI Aus-48 is an exceptional variety.
The variety ensures an abundant yield every season, they added.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Magura sources said over 1,060 hectares of land have been brought under the production of BRRI Aus-48, which was 610 hectares around five years ago.
DAE officials said cultivation of BRRI Aus-48 has increased in the district by about two times in five years. The variety gives 2.7 tonnes of yield from one hectare of land whereas around 1.2 tonnes from the common varieties.
Farmers are preparing to start harvesting their crops, the officials added.
Mazed Sarder of Binodpur village under Mohammapdur upazila said, "We have achieved plenteous production of BRRI Aus-48 paddy this year. The variety requires less rainfall. We grow it in the gap between Boro and Aman production."
"Cultivation of the paddy is expanding as the peasants achieve bumper yield every season. The DAE also arranges incentives for producing this variety", he added.
DAE official Shohrab Hossein said BRRI Aus-48 farming is gaining popularity in the district as the growers can earn more profit from it."
