BRRI celebrates 40 years

Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) is observing its 40th founding anniversary with enthusiasm, reports bdnews24.com.
BRRI officials and employees are hosting detailed programme to observe the day Friday at BRRI premises in Gazipur.
The programme includes procession, seminar, discussion session and cutting cakes.
The festivity started with a colourful procession from BRRI premises at 8.30am which was followed by special seminar and discussion sessions at the institution's auditorium. The session marked some important achievements of the institution during last 40 years since it was established in 1970.
The seminar revealed that BRRI has developed 57 high-yielding rice varities including four hybrids, having two to three times higher yield potential than the traditional varities.
It has also developed more than 50 improved technologies on soil, water, fertiliser and cultural practices of rice. The institute has identified 31 rice diseases and 175 species of pests to combat insects.
Another important achievement of the institute is its preservation of 8,000 rice germplasm in the BRRI Gene Bank collected from home and abroad.
BRRI has trained more than 50,000 officials, scientists, progressive farmers and extension personnels from government and non-government organisations. It has published 230 books, booklets, folders and extension materials for technology dissemination. The session was presided at by Mohammad Abdul Mannan, BRRI director general.
