BRRI-Dhan-29 reignites hopes of farmers in Gopalganj

GOPALGANJ, Apr 17: Cultivation of BRRI-Dhan-29 has raised a new hope among the farmers of Gopalganj Sadar in the district.
According to Gopalganj Sadar Upazila Agriculture Office sources said, about 3,000 hectares of land have been brought under cultivation of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI)-Dhan-29 under Sadar Upazila in Gopalganj this season and production target at 13,500 tonnes, sources said.
Samar Bain (43), a farmer of village Karargati under Durgapur union of Sadar Upazila said, he cultivated BRRI-Dhan-29 on two bighas (104 decimal) of land this year and the condition of its growth is satisfactory and he will get about 50 maunds paddy from it produce which market price is Tk 45,000 to Tk 48,000 Samar said.
Md. Mizanur Rahman, Upazila Agriculture Officer (UAO), Gopalganj Sadar, told the FE that BRRI-Dhan-29 is more profitable paddy and its spending cost is less than Tk 10,000 for one bigha (52 decimal) of land but farmers will get above 25 maunds of paddy from its produce, UAO said.
Rafiq Mridha (40), another farmer of village Nelokhi under Sadar Upazila said, farmer can harvest the crop on only 150 to 160 days from its planting and taste of the rice is better than any other and its market price is comparatively above, Rafiq said.
Some farmers of same village told the correspondent during the visit that BRRI-Dhan-29 is more profitable crop where they need small investments but return is big. As a result the crop farming increasing among the farmers in this region day by day they added.
Samir Kurmar Gowshami, Deputy Director (DD), Agriculture, Gopalganj told the FE that BRRI-Dhan-29 is more profitable than other paddies and our field worker closely monitoring the crop.
