because of their poor educational background.
BRTA officials said the authority is considering the demand to accommodate these drivers within the proper system as they need more training to bring discipline back to the streets for ensuring road safety.
"We have in principle approved the demand of the CNG owners and workers. We consider it to be the need of the time to bring back discipline to the streets," said BRTA chairman Ayubur Rahman Khan.
But he said the authorities are yet to take the final decision on what should be the criteria of assessing the skills of hundreds of thousands of fake driving licence holders and how much the new testing system would compromise on their educational background.
"We might invite these categories of drivers to apply for the learners' driving licences and then allow them to sit for a quizz type test. But they must go through all kinds of tests of the BRTA," the chairman told the FE.
At least 0.4 million fake drivers are claimed to be driving different vehicles in the country. BRTA has issued around 0.90 million driving licences against 1.3 million registered vehicles.
BRTA officials said almost half of the licence applicants go for fake driving licences after becoming unsuccessful in written test. They either are afraid of sitting in the written test due to lack of confidence or take the second option to get fake licence for having no educational background.
Though the demand for licences created sharp reaction among traffic experts, the officials said the BRTA wants to accept the proposal in view of the existing realities.
