BRTC hikes bus fares

Friday, 20 May 2011

FE Report
Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) has increased its fares simultaneously with private bus companies soon after the gazette notification issued Thursday. "We have increased the bus fares experimentally from today (Thursday)," said BRTC General Manager Quazi Shafique Uddin. He said the increase in the fares of the state-run company's buses has been necessary to bring adjustment with the private bus fares. Though the meeting between the communications ministry and the private bus operators Monday stated that the bus fare hike would not be applicable for BRTC buses, the state-owned company increased the fares without any official announcement. Meanwhile the passengers of BRTC alleged that the increase of the fares has made them confused and helpless. Munni, a regular passenger who travels from Mirpur to Motijheel and vice versa, said the fare of her route was hiked to Tk 25 from Tk 16. The BRTC officials admitted that there were hikes in their fares and they did not inform the people beforehand but said it was done by keeping consistency with the chart of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) for certain routes and increase in the fuel price.
