CHITTAGONG, July 26: Survival of the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) will be at risk in the near future as no new vessel has been included in its fleet for long 18 years, sources said.
Most of the 12 vessels in the existing BSC fleet are fit to be scrapped as these vessels have already exceeded 25 years' life.
If the BSC is not modernised, as Bangladesh Biman had been, through proper investment, the national flag carrier may face natural death within a very short time, BSC official said.
Even with the old vessels, the BSC had earned a profit during the last fiscal without any government patronisation, sources said.
The BSC still survives due to some experts and professionals, but the existing human resources development is very poor and even only one-third of the total strength of the human resources are working at this stage, the sources added.
Earning of the BSC has also declined alarmingly due to the persisting global financial crisis. So it has become a question of survival of this public organisation, according to BSC officials.
In this situation, addition of modern and new vessels has become very urgent, otherwise it may face a disaster within a very short time, sources mentioned.
