BSCIC likely to build industrial estates

Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) is likely to build extensions in more than a dozen existing industrial estates across the country, official said.
BSCIC Chairman Siddiqur Rahman told the FE: "The existing industrial estates and parks of the countries are not enough for new entrepreneurs. To meet the escalating demand we are planning to extend 12 industrial estates across the country."
"The extensions will be carried out at Narayanganj, Joydevpur (Konabari), Tangail, Narshingdi, Rajbari, Pabna, Rangpur, Faridpur, Rajshahi, Kushtia, Sylhet (Khadimpur) district."
"We have to acquire at least 190 acres of land for the extension of these 12 BSCIC industrial for poverty alleviation and employment generation."
The extension will have modern infrastructural facilities, security and other necessary services will be provided to the entrepreneurs.
The total estimated cost of the project is Tk 3.13 billion, which will be entirely borne by the government.
Around 1215 plots would be handed over to the local and foreign investors immediately after the project execution.
The project is scheduled to end in June 2015 and will be implemented under BSCIC supervision in the Annual Development Programme after getting the nod of Industries Ministry and the Planning Commission.
Around 74 industrial estates have been set up across the country where a total of 10,330 industrial plots have been set up till May 2010.
Around Tk 1.3 billion has been invested in the BSCIC industrial plots. Around 342,000 people are directly involved in the industries located there.
Meanwhile, BSCIC is going to launch a socio-economic project for the Monga affected people.
BSCIC Chairman Siddiqur Rahman told the FE: "We are going to create job opportunity for the people of 13 monga-hit districts through setting up cottage and rural-based industries."
"Under this project, we will provide training on producing handicraft by bamboo, cane and wood as well as repairing television, radio and motor cycle. Training will also be imparted on apiculture, embroidery, boutique sewing, handloom and food processing for the skill development and income generation of Monga affected people."
The estimated cost of this project is Tk 380 million, which will be entirely borne by the government, he said.
Training on those fields will be provided to the people of Naogaon, Natore, Joypurhat, part of Bogra, Rangpur, Gaibandha, Nilphamari, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Panchagar, Pabna and Sirajganj.
BSCIC Chairman said, "This training will improve skill of the people and provide opportunity to them in these areas and ultimately it will increase their earning capacity and bring about socio-economic development of this area."
"At the same time we will establish small and cottage industries for income generation of the Monga affected people. It will create direct and indirect employment opportunity," he added.
The project is scheduled to end in June 2012 and will be implemented under the BSCIC supervision.
