BSCIC plastic estate likely to be set up at Keraniganj

Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) plastic estate is likely to be set up at Keraniganj in Dhaka to develop and to transfer the unplanned and unhealthy plastic industry of the old Dhaka town.
BSCIC Chairman Siddiqur Rahman told the FE: "The plastic industry of the Old town is unplanned and its workers are working in an unhealthy and packed environment."
"We are going to establish the plastic estate to modernise the plastic industry, to help entrepreneurs and to produce quality goods as well as to boost export and create employment."
He said, "there will be 252 plastic industry plots under the project and after establishment of the project there will be 250 plots that will create employment for 12,500 people directly and many more indirectly."
"This park will be set up on 25 acres of land at Dorgaon under Basta Union at Keraniganj Upazila and it will include infrastructural facilities for like standard plot, electricity, water, gas, roads, drainage etc for plastic entrepreneurs."
Mr Siddiqur Rahman said, "the total projected cost of this special park is Tk 462.3 million which will be entirely borne by the government."
"The project will be concluded within June 2013 and will be implemented under BSCIC supervision in the Annual Development Programme after getting the nod of Industries Ministry and the Planning Commission."
Bangladesh is now exporting plastic shopping bags, garbage bags, butcher bags, oven sacks, industrial films, PVC pipes, polythene sheet, plastic hanger, hand gloves, ropes, plastic waste, V-belt, toys, electronic switches, polyester thread, computer accessories, audio and video cassette, melamine tableware, toothbrush, ball pen and artificial flower etc.
According to industry estimates, with its 4,000 factories the country's Tk 50 billion plastic industry can produce world class plastic products that have a global market of $500 billion.
About 1.0 million people are engaged in the industry directly, while more than 2.0 million people are dependent on the sector.
Bangladesh exports plastic goods to Poland, China, the UK, Belgium, France, Germany, the USA, Canada, Spain, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Australia, Sri Lanka, Japan, Malaysia, the UAE and Italy.
