BSF forces work to stop on Benapole check-post

Monday, 9 June 2014

Work on constructing a boundary wall of the immigration check-post site in Benapole was halted after protests by members of the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) on Monday.
Manir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Benapole police immigration, said the BSF members forced the work stoppage on Monday morning.
The BSF members said they would not allow the construction to continue there without permission from higher authorities, he said.
This was despite BSF already having built a similar boundary wall on their side, he said.
When connected, Commanding officer of BGB-26, Lieutenant Colonel Matiur Rahman, said a decision on the matter will be taken after a visit by the two countries’ respective Land Survey departments officials on June 12. There is nothing to be worried about, he said.
The Bangladesh government allocated 1.80 acres of land for Benapole immigration site after the launch of India-Bangladesh passport in 1971, said the OC. That special passport-regime for people in the 3 border areas – often separated from family expired last year.
An academic building, and a residential complex were established in the immigration area after the Liberation War, but one boundary remained unprotected for long, he added, according to UNB.
