FE Report
Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation (BSFF), in association with Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters Association (BFFEA) and the Department of Fisheries, organised a seminar in the city on EU non-tariff trade rules for shrimp and fish-based export industry.
President over by BSFF Chairman Syed Mahmudul Huq, the seminar was attended by Fisheries and Livestock Adviser CS Karim as the chief guest.
Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Syed Ataur Rahman, delegation of the EC to Bangladesh Acting Chief Francoise Collet and FAO Representative in Bangladesh Ad Spijkers were present as the special guests.
BSFF Executive Director Mahmudul Karim presented the keynote paper in the seminar.
A Bangla training and extension guide prepared by the BSFF on EU non-tariff trade rules for the country's shrimp and fish-based export industry was launched at the programme.
The EU, the US and other fish-importing countries have imposed stiff food safety and other rules on shrimp and fish export non-compliance of which may lead to rejection of the country's food consignments and even a ban on the export.
It is extremely urgent that stakeholders along with the entire food chains -- operators of hatcheries, farms, shrimp depots, shrimp factories, feed mills and ice factories -- must be fully aware of the EU rules and carefully comply with them for sustaining the shrimp and fish-based export industry, the country's second most important source of export earning.
