State-run quality watchdog is expected to get international accreditation by December, which will enable its certification to be recognised all over the world.
Authorities of Bangladesh Standard Testing Institute (BSTI) said it has completed all necessary requirements to get the international accreditation.
The BSTI has improved testing facility of 83 ingredients including foods items, cement, and textiles by setting up new machineries and necessary infrastructure.
"We have applied to the Indian government to provide us international accreditation. They will conduct an assessment. Already they have appointed an independent assessment body for it," said BSTI director (standard) Syed Humayun Kabir.
Indian experts have provided technical support to help the testing institute develop its expertise and also helped its refurbishment, he added.
The authorities carried out the reform activities under a project, funded by the European Union (EU) and UN Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).
Standard certificates of a country will be accepted all over the world after getting accreditation from any of the accredited authority.
All the SAARC countries will come under similar standard criteria very soon after signing 'SAARC agreement on implementation of regional standards' and 'SAARC agreement on mutual arrangement on recognition of conformity assessment'.
The agreements are set to be signed in an inter-governmental expert group meeting scheduled for November, the BSTI official said.
After finalisation of the two agreements, SAARC countries will follow similar regional standard on import and export of products.
