FE Report
Formulation of SAARC Common Standards will boost up the socio-economic development process of this region by removing technical barriers to trade and rapid industrialisation, Industries Minister Dilip Barua said Monday. Bangladesh is still lagging behind in applying the modern standard management though the industrialisation growth rate is gradually gaining momentum, he said. "Bangladesh has to go for a major legal and institutional reform in standards, metrology and accreditation in order to establish a modern and acceptable system to protect the rights of consumers," he said adding if SAARC Common Standards are formulated in the light of South Africa's experience, socio-economic development of this region will be possible through rapid industrialisation." The minister was speaking at the inaugural session of a seminar on 'Experience of Developing South African and African Quality and Conformity Assessment Infrastructure: Lesson for Bangladesh' in the city. United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and Ministry of Industries (MoI) jointly organised the seminar where UNIDO Technical Consultant Franz Hengstberger presented his keynote paper. To face the existing challenges successfully it requires a huge multi-dimensional legal or institutional, scientific and technical venture that should be taken care of by all concerned stakeholders including the development partners, the minister said.
