DUCSU election

BSU, SFB for setting up of polling centres outside halls

DU Correspondent | Tuesday, 29 January 2019

Two student organisations on Monday demanded setting up of polling centres outside the residential halls for holding the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) election in a free and fair manner.
They also demanded that the authorities concerned set up polling centres at the academic building so that the university administration and other election watchdogs can properly monitor the election.
Students Federation of Bangladesh (SFB) placed the demand at a press conference held at Madhu's canteen of Dhaka University.
Jahid Sujon, central general secretary of Chhatra Federation, alleged that residential students were being forced to join the programmes drawn up by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).
He also said they had already launched a mass-signature collection campaign to drum up support for setting up the polling centres outside the halls.
SFB president Golam Mustafa, Dhaka University (DU) unit president Umme Habiba Benojir, its general secretary Ashraful Huq Ishtiak and organising secretary Nasir Abdullah also attended the press conference.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Students Union (BSU) at a rally held at the foot of Aparajeya Bangla of the university also demanded setting up of polling centres outside the residential halls so that general students can cast their vote without any fear.
Chhatra Union's central president GM Zilani Shuvo at the rally said DUCSU polls did not take place in last 28 years due to 'indifference of the successive university administrations and governments in order to maintain their dominance on the campus.' He also warned that general students would not allow any farce in the name of election.
Later, leaders and activists of Chhatra Union brought out a procession to press home their demands which paraded several streets on the campus.
Earlier on January 23, Vice Chancellor Dr Akhtaruzzaman announced that DUCSU and hall union elections will be held on March 11.
