BTCL offers subsidised tariff for int'l calls

About 0.8 million landline-users of Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Ltd (BTCL) will be able to make international calls to 55 countries at subsidised tariff from today (Tuesday).
The offer comes, as the state-run telecom company has decided to provide the Economy ISD (EISD) facility, which the subscribers can now enjoy by using the access code 012.
Under the facility, each call from a BTCL-phone to any mobile or land-phone of 23 countries will cost Tk 6.0, while for the rest 32 countries Tk 6.0 will be charged for calling to a mobile number and Tk 16.50 to a fixed-phone number.
The countries included in the first category are Bahamas, Bermuda, Brunei, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Gabon, Guam, Hong Kong, Macau, Malawi, Malaysia, Puerto Rico, Saipan, San Marino, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, US Virgin Island, the US, Uzbekistan and Vatican.
On the other hand, Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Laos, Luxemburg, Mongolia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Panama, Poland, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Togo, Turkey, the UK, Venezuela and Zambia are included in the second category.
Landlines used by the government offices and officials will not come under the facility. They will have to apply to avail this service.
The BTCL is the country's leading public switched telephone network (PSTN) operator with 872,409 subscribers as of March 2010.
