BTCL reduces charges for internet services

Friday, 19 March 2010

Bangladesh Tel ecomunications Com- pany Limited (BTCL) has decided to reduce further broadband Internet service charges with effect from April 1, reports BSS.
BTCL Managing Director SM Khabiruzzaman disclosed the decision to reporters at BTCL conference room in the city Thursday.
He said as per the changed rates the registration charge for any type of ADCL package would be Tk 100 in place of Tk 500 while the set up or configuration charge Tk 300 instead of Tk 600.
Internet usage charges of different speeds will also be reduced. The monthly charge for 128 kbps (kilobyte per second) speed will be Tk 500 instead of Tk 800.
The connection fee will be Tk 400 in place of Tk 1100, the BTCL managing director said.
Replying to a question, the BTCL chief said the allegation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's son computer scientist Sajib Wazed Joy's involvement in illegal VoIP (voice over internet protocol) was completely baseless and false.
He said this kind of allegation had shocked all in the telecom sector. He urged the opposition chief whip to withdraw the allegation.
The BTCL managing director said his organisation earned Tk 5.0 billion from overseas calls. Therefore, the allegation of Tk 15-billion VoIP business involving Joy was illogical.
Khabiruzzaman said the present government had reduced incoming call rates from abroad to three cents from four cents. If the rate was reduced to 1.5 cents, there would be no illegal VoIP business, he added.
He mentioned that the incoming call rate in India was only one cent. Therefore, there was no illegal VoIP in India.
The BTCL managing director said the easy way to stop illegal VoIP business was to lower the incoming call rate.
