BTCL revenue earnings rise, but number of subscribers falls in Q1

Revenue earnings by Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) increased by Tk 696.60 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2008-09 over the matching period of last fiscal despite a significant fall in the number of its subscribers.
BTCL, formerly Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board (BTTB), earned the revenues after beginning its journey as a limited company on July 1, this year.
Revenue income by the state-run telecommunications enterprise during the period from July to September this fiscal amounted to Tk 3.80 billion while the amount was Tk 3.11 billion in first three months of last fiscal.
A recent BTCL report on region-wise telephone connections shows that the number of its subscribers fell by 7,659 in September last compared to October 2007.
In October last year, BTCL had a total of 8,59,136 subscribers and the number stood at 8,51,477 in September this year.
The report also reveals that even after its transformation into a limited company, the number of total BTCL subscribers did not rise. The number of subscribers dropped by 619 during October.
The number of its subscribers declined from 8,51,477 in September this year to 8,50,858 in October last.
The report said that a total of 6,6 57 telephone lines were disconnected in October last. Of these, 6,217 telephone lines were disconnected on charge of non payment of dues by the subscribers while 440 lines disconnected on request by the subscribers concerned.
Consortium Submarine Cable was formally inaugurated on 21st May, 2006 and connected to the global information super highway through consortium, enabling better overseas gate-way facilities for data communications as well as voice communications for public and private operators. To connect the whole country with this Submarine Cable, different activities are taken.
Sources said, BTCL launched its journey with a total of 12,646 officials and employees. The value of BTCL is estimated at Tk. 150 billion.
Talking to the FE, a senior BTCL official said the BTCL is taking steps to make itself a modern, dynamic and smooth service providing national enterprise.
Initiatives have been made to make it the country's most-accessible 'Internet Service Provider.' Currently, BTCL is providing dial-up internet access in all 64 districts of the country. It also plans to launch a wide-range of broadband internet services as soon as possible, he said.
