BTRC asks MNOs to bring down packages to 40

FE REPORT | Wednesday, 6 September 2023

Bangladesh Telecommu-nication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has asked the mobile network operators (MNOs) to bring down the number of packages from as many as 95 to 40.
The regulator has also directed the mobile operators to stop the internet data packages for 3 and 15 days from October 15.
Customers will have the option to purchase internet data packages for just 7 or 30 days or for an indefinite period.
BTRC gave these instructions on Sunday last.
According to the regulator, they conducted a survey of mobile users and concluded that "customers are also in favour of limiting the offer packages".
Currently, operators have 95 types of packages, with validity ranging from one hour to indefinite.
However, BTRC has directed operators to limit the number of packages to 40 which operators think a deterrent to the growth of the industry.
Posts and Telecommuni-cations Minister Mustafa Jabbar told the media that it was not possible for customers to select the preferred package from 95 types of packages.
"People are getting confused to an extreme extent with this, so we have asked to reduce its number to 40," he added.
