Budget Analysis Unit launched in Parliament
Wednesday, 8 December 2010
The newly established Budget Analysis and Monitoring Unit (BAMU) of Bangladesh Parliament will provide in-house knowledge to MPs so that they can analyse and monitor the preparation and implementation of the national budget, reports UNB.
Speaker Advocate M Abdul Hamid and US ambassador in Bangladesh James F Moriarty jointly inaugurated the BAMU of Bangladesh Parliament Tuesday.
The unit will produce economic forecasts, address specific requests of MPs and parliamentary committees and provide information to help the House to identify national funding priorities.
The US government, through United Nations Agency for International Development (USAID), supports BAMU as part of $18 million Promoting Governance, Accountability, Transparency and Integrity (PROGATI) project.
In a written statement, Mr Moriarty said, "We look forward to contributing towards Bangladesh's ongoing efforts to promote good governance and improve stewardship of public resources and we remain committed to working with the Government and the people of Bangladesh to promote the principles of transparency and accountability."
