Budget ‘illegal, unethical’, says BNP

Thursday, 5 June 2014

The BNP has bashed the new budget saying it is ‘illegal and unethical’, even before the finance minister was done presenting it in Parliament.
“You can’t call this government legitimate,” said the party’s acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a discussion Thursday noon, according to a news agency.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith began presenting the 2014-15 budget in Parliament at 3:30pm.
“This Parliament is also not legal. How can those who are not elected by the people present a budget in Parliament?”
He said the BNP believed that only elected representatives can work to alleviate the conditions of the people.
People did not vote in the election on Jan 5, he claimed, which, boycotted by the BNP, paved the Awami League’s return to power.
“154 have been elected without contest. Only 5 per cent voted for the remaining seats. So how can this be a legal Parliament?” asked Fakhrul.
“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina even lied to her hosts when she toured Japan. She said her government swept to power with immense votes.”
The BNP leader claimed the note the prime minister sent to Narendra Modi after he swept the polls to power in India also contained lies about her government.
