Buet closed indefinitely after campus violence

Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) was closed for an indefinite period after a group of students carried out vandalism in its academic buildings on Thursday. The university authorities asked the students to vacate their dormitories by 5:00 pm on Thursday. A notice over the closure signed by Buet registrar Prof AKM Masud was hung on notice broads of Buet’s different dormitories at noon. The notice says a group of students besieged the offices of Buet Vice Chancellor, Registrar and Students’ Welfare Director on June 23, demanding that term final examinations be postponed. They laid a siege to the teacher’s residential area on June 24 and vandalised some academic buildings at night. All the academic activities of the university has been suspended for an indefinite period for maintaining overall discipline, restoring good academic atmosphere and ensuring the security of lives and property of teachers, students and officials, the notice adds, according to a news agency.
