BUET closes sine die over clashes

Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) was closed for indefinite period Saturday in the wake of clashes between two groups of students over summer vacation.
Two groups of students were locked into clashes over demanding the summer vacation, which is scheduled to start from June 27, but one group demanding it in advance from Monday, BUET public relations officer Shah Alam said.
The clash erupted as several students came to attend the classes, disagreeing with the decision of other students not to attend classes demanding early summer vacation for watching the world cup football matches, Shah Alam said.
At least five students, including a seventh batch female student Mom, were injured during chase and counter chase between the two groups of students, over the beginning of summer vacation, he added.
The authorities, fearing further clashes, declared the university closed sine die after an emergency meeting with BUET Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof Habibur Rahman in the chair in the afternoon.
The university authorities asked the male students to vacate the halls by 8: 30 pm Saturday and the female students by 10 am today (Sunday). A press release, signed by BUET Registrar Md Shahjahan, informed the media of the closure in the evening.
