A seminar on 'engineering education in a globally competitive marketplace' was held at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) Saturday marking the completion of its 60 years in engineering education in Bangladesh.
Director of Advanced Research Institute and Virginia Tech in USA Saifur Rahman made the key speech at the seminar.
He said the engineering educators face a dilemma in the globally competitive marketplace as they feel the necessity to teach theory so that students can better understand the principles of design.
On the other hand, to provide more practical knowledge to the engineering students is also essential to make them productive to their employers just after completing their studies.
He made a clarion call to engineering education community to bring about a combination between theoretical and practical education to address the challenges in basic operation of manufacturing, software design, industrial production and construction.
BUET Vice-Chancellor AMM Safiullah attended the seminar as the chief guest while other faculty members of the university also spoke on the occasion.
