Thursday, 4 December 2014

A Kishoreganj court has sent a teacher of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) to jail in a dowry harassment case. Senior Judicial Magistrate Ali Ahsan passed the order. Accused Arifur Rahman of Dinajpur district is a teacher of Department of Water Resources Engineering, BUET. His wife filed the case on Oct 21 last year under the Section 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act. According to the case details, then a student of BUET, Arif in 2007 married the daughter of Advocate Sohrabuddin Ahmed of Kishoreganj. Since then, she used to stay at her parents’ home in Kishoreganj town with Arif going there on weekends. As Arif was from a poor family, his father-in-law had to bear all his expenses. After he became a teacher of BUET in 2011, Arif started pressuring his wife for dowry. He also tortured his wife physically and mentally as she did not agree with his demand. Last year, he told her to bring Tk 500,000 from her parents for maintenance of their village home in Dinajpur. As she refused, Arif started wasting time to formally bring her to his house. He also denied their relationship at one stage. The court summoned Arif to appear before it after the plaintiff lodged the case, according to a news agency.
