Building inequality-free society main goal of independence: DU VC

DU CORRESPONDENT | Monday, 30 March 2026

DU VC Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam on Sunday said achieving independence remains the nation's greatest pride, but its main purpose lies in eliminating social disparities and ensuring economic, social, and democratic freedom for all citizens.
The vice chancellor (VC) made these remarks while presiding over a discussion titled "Significance of Independence and National Day" held at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) auditorium of Dhaka University (DU).
He emphasised that the spirit of independence will only be fully realised when every citizen enjoys equal rights, justice, and freedom of expression.
The event was attended by Pro-VC (Administration) Professor Dr. Sayema Haque Bidisha as a special guest. Other speakers included Professor Dr. Md. Selim Reza, dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, who represented the teachers, and SM Farhad, general secretary of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU), representing the students.
In his speech, the VC noted that Dhaka University has played a significant role in every historic achievement of the nation, from the Language Movement to the Liberation War and anti-autocracy movements.
He paid deep tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War, praying for the salvation of their souls. He also expressed respect for those who sacrificed their lives in various democratic movements in the country.
He further stated that even after over 50 years of independence, a gap remains between expectations and achievements. He stressed the need for collective efforts to establish a society free from inequality and grounded in democracy and humanity.
