Thursday, 2 June 2011
An alleged mugger sustained bullet injures during a 'shootout' between two muggers and police in the city's Jatrabari area early Wednesday.
The arrested was identified as Mohammad Ali, 45. Two knives and a motorcycle were recovered from the spot.
Police said Mahmudur Rahman, 45, a trader, was waiting to catch a bus near Saidabad Bridge in North Jatrabari at 4:30 am. He was going to Barisal.
Two snatchers riding on a motorbike appeared on the spot and made futile attempt to mug him.
Mahmudur Rahman raised hue and cry. Hearing the scream a patrol team of Jatrabari police station rushed to the spot.
Sensing presence of police, the muggers attempted to escape opening fire on the law-enforcers, who retaliated, triggering a brief gunfight that left mugger Md Ali injured.
However, his cohort Zahir, 40, managed to flee leaving the bike behind.
Police held Md Ali along with two big knives and the bike.
Md Ali, who received bullet in his leg, was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital from where he was shifted to Pongu Hospital.
