RANGPUR, April 6 (BSS): Officials and farmers are expecting an all-time high bumper Boro production this year in the country's northern region as the blooming crop grows excellent under favourable climatic conditions.
The fixed target of producing 6,659,361 tonnes rice would be achieved as the farmers have brought eight per cent more land than the target fixed under Boro in the region, officials and experts in the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said Monday.
The farmers have brought over 1,695,000 hectares land under Boro farming against the fixed target of 1,569,209 hectares, which is 8 per cent higher than the target and the climatic conditions have now become very favorable, they said.
The crop fields are pleasing to look at as the flowering Boro plants are growing well and harvest of the early variety Boro paddy in the beels, haors and low-lying areas and riverbeds would begin very soon.
Besides, harvesting of the early BRRI Dhan 28, 36 and 45 varieties Boro will begin from the first week of May though harvesting of all varieties Boro will begin in full swing from the end of May and the first week of June, the officials told the news agency.
The government has been making all-out efforts and engaged adequate resources to make the Boro farming programme successful so that the country's food security was ensured. Special steps have been taken to increase rice production this year, they added.
The farmers are also working with full dedication in the Boro fields understanding that the government has given maximum priority to an increased rice production to make the country self-sufficient in food-grains and ensure fair price of paddy.
