Bumper Boro yield likely in districts

TANGAIL, Apr 9: Farmers of the district are expecting a bumper production of Boro paddy in the 12 upazilas of the district during the current season. This year many low and other crops lands have also been brought under Boro cultivation. The farmers of the District said, easy availability of seeds and fertiliser helped the Boro cultivation. The DAE sources said a total 167403 hectares of land has been brought under Boro cultivation with a production target of 644098 tonnes of paddy. Md Shamser Ali, a farmer of village Mahmudpur under Delduar Upazila said this year Boro paddy is growing very well due to favourable weather. Deputy Director (DD) DAE Tangail S M Afaz Uddin told the FE that "supply of every inputs related to Boro cultivation and a favourable weather a bumper production is expected this current season. The Bangladesh Krishi Bank and other government and non-government banks had disbursed adequate crops loans to make Boro cultivation a success. Rangpur BSS adds: The experts and officials are expecting a record bumper production of Boro rice as the farmers have brought nearly 4 per cent more land under its farming than the fixed target this season in the northern region. The Boro plants are now growing excellent under favourable climatic condition and the farmers have put their all-out efforts in taking care of the Boro fields that have worn eye-catching look everywhere in the region, officials and farmers said. The farmers have cultivated Boro in 16,89,583 hectares of land, which is 3.89 per cent higher than the fixed target of bringing 16,26,405 hectares to produce 64,95,973 tonnes of Boro rice this season in this food granary of the country this season. Of them, the farmers have brought 2,73,246 hectares of land under farming of hybrid variety Boro, 14,07,630 hectares under high yielding variety and 8,707 hectares of land under farming of the local variety Boro this time in northern Bangladesh. The Boro plants are now growing excellent everywhere and the early varieties are in bloom in the low-lying beds of the dried-up water bodies, rivers, beels and haors where the farmers transplanted the seedlings in late December and early January last. The DAE officials said the government has been providing adequate facilities including agri-loans, subsidies, power and fuel supply for smooth irrigation, fertilisers and other inputs to the farmers to make the Boro farming programme successful. Horticulturist of the DAE Mezbahul Islam said the agri- related departments are providing assistance, service and environment-friendly latest technologies to the farmers to ensure maximum Boro rice production at reduced costs this time. Renowned rice scientist Dr MA Mazid predicted a bumper production of Boro this season if the climatic situation remains favourable during the next couple of months, as the government has been providing maximum assistances to the farmers. Additional Director of the DAE Mohsin Ali said the officials, experts and field level DAE workers are providing necessary assistance to the farmers regarding timely irrigation, fertiliser and pests' managements to make the programme successful.
