Bumper garlic output expected in Bogra

BOGRA, Mar 17: The farmers of the district are expecting a satisfactory production of garlic this season following various government steps and favourable climatic condition.
According to the sources concerned, the cash crop is now growing well everywhere in the district including its vast char tract predicting bumper production. The farmers of the area said, "Harvesting will begin next week if the weather remains favourable."
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said, "We have set a target of bringing around 480 hectares of land in 12 upazilas of the districts under garlic farming during the current season but the farmers cultivated the crop on 500 hectares of land."
The farmers said, "Besides, the various other research and development organisations like BARI, BRAC, BADC and many NGOs have taken adequate steps in collaboration with other departments in this season to achieve the fixed production target.
"The agriculture department and NGOs have provided quality seeds, necessary inputs and trainings on the latest technologies to make the programme successful." they added.
Official source said, "The landless and marginal farmers have also brought vast tracts of the sandy char lands under garlic cultivation." A farmer Dulal Hossain of Dawkola village under Sadar upazila said, "I have taken 0.23 acres of land under garlic cultivation in this season spending Tk 1900 and I expect Tk 20000 profit from the cropland."
"For arranging a training programme by Department of Agriculture Extension, we desire a handsome profit from the cropland." he added.
Deputy Director of DAE Bazlur Rashid said, "This district has immense prospects to achieve self- reliance in garlic productions." "So, the farmers are showing more interest to grow garlic in their lands." he added.
