Bumper harvest of onion in Gopalganj

GOPALGANJ, Apr 12: The farmers of Muksudpur in Gopalganj district are looking forward to harvesting a bumper onion crop this season.
The farmers have already started the harvest and it will continue until the last week of this month, an official of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said.
According to DAE sources, Gopalganj has taken up a massive onion cultivation programme on 1450 hectares of land with the production target of 11,591 tonnes in the district.
In Muksudpur upazila production target was fixed at 4,860 tonnes in 600 hectares of land and in other four upazilas - Gopalgonj Sadar, Kasiani, Kotalipara and Tungipara upazila - the total production target had been fixed at 6,731 tonnes from 850 hectares of land.
Tayab Ali Mollah (50), an onion farmer of village Shalina Box under Muksudpur upazila, while talking to this correspondent, said that the production of onion this year surpasses the yield obtained in the last five years. Not only that, 60 to 70 maunds of onion have been produced in a bigha this year.
The farmer purchased one kilogramme of onion seeds from the market at Tk 500 to Tk 550 and spent Tk 10,000 to Tk 12,000 on cultivation on each bigha of land. Now one maund of onion is selling at Tk 600 to Tk 650.
While talking to the FE, DAE Deputy Director Biplop Kumar Saha, said favourable weather and availability of seeds, fertiliser and water helped farmers harvest a bumper crop of onion.
